Trade and Health Forum Activities
Trade and Health Forum Activities at the Denver Annual
Meeting
Environment Section members are invited to attend the activities
of the Trade and Health Forum this year in Denver. The Forum was established in 2005 to bring
together members from various sections who were concerned about the effect that
trade and trade policy have on public health.
Trade and trade policy have broad ramifications for
environmental health, including pollution and chemical exposures due to the
expansion and restructuring of agricultural and industrial production, water privatization and distribution, trade
in dangerous products or waste, and limitations on governments’ ability to set protective regulations as a condition
of many bilateral and multi-lateral trade agreements.
Join us to learn about these issues and more in Denver:

The Student Involvement Committee
The Student Involvement Committee (SIC)
is looking forward to an excellent set of poster and oral presentations at the
APHA Annual Meeting in Denver this November! The finalists in the
Student Poster Award session will present on Monday morning, Nov. 8
(10:15-12:30 commitment). At present, we have a set of five judges including Dr.
Derek Shendell and Jyostna Jagai working before, during (review) and after
(scoring) the session, including three Student Scholarship recipients
(presenting in other sessions). There are 10 finalists confirmed attending; one
wait-list finalist has been accepted into another oral session co-sponsored
with other sections. We again thank the various senior Section members who
served as peer-reviewers of the dozens of abstracts submitted from students of
public health, urban planning, environmental science and policy from throughout
the United States and even from a few European nations. Please note four of the 10
finalists revised their abstracts by June (now available online) based on new
research data and/or co-authors since February submission. Furthermore, we thank
section members who made efforts to solicit donations from U.S. schools of public health for the funds supporting scholarships for students to help defray
costs of attending the Annual Meeting. Many students applied for scholarships
this year; applications were reviewed and about 3-in-4 (33 overall, and about
half are from underrepresented racial/ethnic minority groups) were provided
travel-related support based on documented need, thanks to a generous grant
from the Kresge Foundation. Many of the recipients are already volunteering
their time to support Environment Section committee work, including the Topic
Committee on Climate Change and Global Health (n=4 students as of this
writing); the Student Involvement Committee (n=5 in total); Program Planning
(n=1); etc. We hope all of them will contribute to the Section. Please make
new student members feel welcome and encourage them to get involved when you
meet them in Denver at any of our sessions, at one of our morning
business meetings, or at the social hour on Monday night, Nov. 8! Finally,
Environment Section committee leaders, please e-mail Dr. Derek Shendell and
Rebecca Tave Gluskin (SIC co-chairs) with names of students now working with
your team.

The Climate Change Committee
The Environment Section’s Climate
Change and Health Topic Committee is working on several ideas to further
disseminate information on climate change and health, as well as looking
forward to our full session on Indicators of Climate Vulnerability and
Community Resilience (Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 10:30 a.m.) at
the APHA Annual Meeting. On the news front, an informal committee
subgroup has formed to discuss ways that public health professionals and
meteorologists might partner to get teams into K-12 schools to educate students
on the linkages between health and climate change. There is also a
subgroup to survey resources on climate change adaptation. Committee
comments on the proposed structure and process of U.S. Global Change Research
Program’s “U.S. National Climate Assessment Objectives, Proposed Topics, and Next
Steps,” were compiled via the APHA staff and sent in to USGCRP. Our Committee
is hoping to locate a venue related to climate change in Denver, where we can
plan an evening gathering and some quiet conversation after the excitement of
the meeting, so stay tuned for location postings.

BUILT ENVIRONMENT Tour
Tour of Globeville, Five Points and Stapleton
Globeville housed the stockyards and mine smelters for Denver in the early 20th
century, with many of the workers living in Five Points, Denver’s historic
African-American neighborhood. This tour
visits these communities, and discusses how they are attempting to transform in
spite of environmental hazards, being a food desert, a lack of infrastructure and
overall neglect. The tour will be
facilitated by Daniel Scheppers from the state department of health, who led
the state’s effort in addressing the Globeville environmental remediation.
The tour will end at the Stapleton Redevelopment Site,
a neighborhood located at the former airport designed following smart growth
principles.

APHA Environmental Public Health Staff Update
Wow - the summer is gone, and we’re
already gearing up for the Annual Meeting in Denver!
It’s been a busy summer here, and we’re planning on an even busier fall. In
the meantime we want to share some of our recent accomplishments with the Section. Climate Change – We
experienced an amazing turnout for our webinar series “Climate Change:
Mastering the Public Health Role,” which wrapped up in June. Archived webinars
are available on APHA’s newly re-launched EPH website www.apha-environment.org. Look for
an announcement this fall about a second climate change webinar series. Our
legislative staff has worked hard to secure increased public health climate
change funding. Thanks to everyone for supporting their efforts and responding
to APHA Action
Alerts!
Food Policy – We
continue to educate policy-makers about the need for public health-based food
safety legislation. APHA is a member of the Make Our Food Safe Coalition, which
has been instrumental in pushing for new food safety legislation. Separately,
we are also beginning to work with members and partners to identify public
health priorities related to farm and agriculture policy.
Chemical Exposures – We supported
development of the National Conversation on Public Health and Chemical
Exposures Community
Conversations Toolkit. More than 1,000 people from 25 states participated in
these conversations. Interested members will have an opportunity to comment on
draft workgroup reports in September and on the draft Action Agenda in
December.
EPH in the Press – Our
new environmental health website was recently featured on Medscape! Our work
to collect stories from the field was also highlighted in the September issue
of The Nation’s Health.
Please check them out if you haven’t already.
We’re expecting to be busy through the
year and look forward to continuing to work with the section.
See you in Denver!
