Eric Hurwitz, DC, PhD, a researcher associated with UCLA and the Southern California University of the Health Sciences/Los Angeles College of Chiropractic (SCUHS), was the principal author of an article published recently in the prestigious American Journal of Public Health, the journal of the American Public Health Association. The October 2005 issue of AJPH carried his article titled, “Effects of Recreational Physical Activity and Back Exercises on Low Back Pain and Psychological Distress: Findings From the UCLA Low Back Pain Study.” This is only the sixth article ever authored or co-authored by a DC to be selected for publication in this very prestigious research and professional journal, and remarkably Dr. Hurwitz was involved in four of the six.

Dr. Hurwitz was also the principal author of the first article in AJPH by a DC in 1998, and co-author and principal author of two articles in the October 2002 issue. Dr. Monica Smith was the co-author of an article by a DC to appear in AJPH in December 2002, and Dr. Mitchell Haas was co-author of another AJPH article in December 2003. Dr. Hurwitz is an active member of the Chiropractic Health Care  Section and is currently serving a three-year term as one its Section Councilors.  APHA, with its 50,000+ members, is the oldest, largest, and most influential public health association in the world. Doctors and students of chiropractic are strongly encouraged to join APHA. More information can be found at the APHA Web site at http://www.APHA.org.
