The Tragedy and the Opportunity

I continue to be stunned by the troubling images and heart-rending stories coming from New Orleans recently. Our meetings have been moved geographically to Pennsylvania and time-shifted into December. More importantly, the local destruction and devastation have been overwhelming, and the human toll, in terms of lives and personal tragedies, has been substantial from hurricane Katrina. What can we do? How can we help?

Here are some suggestions to consider:
Residents of the Gulf Coast, in particular those with limited socioeconomic options, have suffered tremendously. In most cases, the best way we can help them is to contribute whatever money we can spare to the enormous recovery effort through established charities, such as the Red Cross. A list of organizations accepting contributions is available at <http://www.nvoad.org/membersdb.php?members=National>.

Let’s not forget the emergency responders and dedicated public health workers who have been on the front lines, working in difficult conditions to limit the terrible effects and prevent further damage from the consequences of this hurricane. Keeping these people in our thoughts and prayers is very important. And offering care and support for those from our own communities who are traveling to help out will be greatly appreciated. APHA is also recommending that monetary donations go to: <http://www.apha.org/preparedness/Katrina_relief.htm>.

And I’m sure we all have significant worries and concerns for our Louisiana and Mississippi colleagues whose lives, families, and practices have been damaged and destroyed in this tragedy. The CAL and MCA are organizing efforts to provide assistance to members with needs.

I am also aware that many of our Section members have had difficulties in changing their Annual Meeting plans and reservations. Please visit the New Orleans Update page on the APHA Web site for current and accurate information:

This comprehensive resource has valuable guidance and recommendations on a number of subjects, including obtaining refunds for cancelled flights and hotel reservations.

About Philadelphia
And finally, this year we’re still preparing for our Section’s 10th anniversary celebration! We’re making changes to our plans but will guarantee a smashing time for all Section members. This is a very important milestone, and hopefully the first of many anniversary celebrations. We still will be presenting a great scientific program (see details in this newsletter or on the Web site). There will still be an important business meeting, at which we’ll be planning and strategizing for the next several years. And we will still have an interesting and influential booth display to educate and inform other health care workers. So, I want to encourage all Section members to review your schedules and make plans to come to Philadelphia, especially those who are on the east coast, or who have family and friends on the east coast to visit. Please make your plans now to join us in Philadelphia, Dec. 10-14, 2005, for the 133rd meeting of APHA and the 10th anniversary of the Chiropractic Health Care section. I’m looking forward to seeing you there!
