Development of Community-Based Partnerships
in Minority Aging Research

The objective of this workshop is to discuss multi-directional mentoring processes in establishing, maintaining and strengthening community-based partnerships for minority aging research. The specific aims are to:

  • explore diverse methods to maintain partnerships with community-based organizations providing services to aging minorities;

  • discuss the partnership development and safeguarding process with community-based leaders; and

  • present an overview of innovative approaches to mentor community-based leaders and academic scientists in the process of
    developing and maintaining partnerships for aging research.


Success and challenges faced in the collaborative work of the NIA funded Community Liaison Cores of the Resource Centers for Minority Aging Research (RCMARs) will be presented. Partnerships with

  • community-based organizations,

  • faith-based organizations,and

  • tribal organizations


will be used as examples. Presenters will include representatives from these community organizations.


QUALITATIVE AND MIXED METHODS RESEARCH: IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF SCIENCE AND ADDRESSING HEALTH DISPARITIES
9 a.m.-5 p.m.

This full-day preconference workshop brings together a nationally recognized faculty of investigators, journal editors, and funding agency representatives to focus on elevating the quality of research proposals, enhancing the standards of research methodology, and improving the caliber of resulting publications. A central focus concerns how these methods help illuminate the meaning of the experiences and needs of special populations, including ethnic and racial minorities and vulnerable elders. The conference is targeted to researchers and advanced students involved in qualitative and mixed methods research.
