Many of you already know that our Section is suffering financially as a result of historically low interest rates. All of you who refinanced your homes (as I did) benefited from those rates, but our Section earned only 1 percent on our endowments last year as a result of the low returns (we anticipated 5 percent returns). We get only $2-3 per member from APHA to support our Section activities. (We are currently around 500 members). Most of the operating costs of the Section (telephone, copying, etc) are absorbed by the leadership & their organizations. Our major expenses are related to the Annual Meeting, including the cash prizes for our awards, our wonderful reception, booth rental, etc.
The bottom line is that our operating account is threadbare. A few have already sent special contributions to help the Section pay for Annual Meeting expenses, and I'm writing now to ask the rest to help out. Whatever you can afford is appreciated, and here is what we would like to suggest as amounts:
Benefactor level - Homeowners are encouraged to share some of the savings of low interest rates & use this level - $1,000 contribution.
Patron level - New car buyers also saved big from low interest rates & are encouraged to use this level - $500 contribution.
Contributor level - Minimum suggested for Regular/FT employed - $100.
Friend level - Minimum suggested for Student/PT employed - $10-25.
Please make out your tax deductible check to "American Public Health Association" and write in the memo area "GHS Enrichment Account # 328063". Mail it to Gerry Eggert, GHS Development Chair, 28 Lawton St., Rochester, NY 14607. He will make sure the donations get deposited into our Section's account.
Thanks in advance for your support!
