The Institute of Medicine recently released a report, Reducing Underage Drinking: A Collective Responsibility. This report, a joint effort with the National Research Council, says that reducing underage drinking requires a cooperative effort from all levels of government, alcohol manufacturers and retailers, the entertainment industry, parents and other adults in a community and proposes a comprehensive strategy to curb underage drinking. Among its recommendations, the study proposed an increase in alcohol excise tax, especially on beer, as a proven method to decrease underage abuse.
