Theme - Social Justice: A Public Health Imperative
Social Justice lies at the heart of public health. It is central to its mission and is frequently described as public health’s core value. The social circumstances in which we are born, live, and work, play a greater role in longevity and overall health in the United States than genes, health insurance and access to health services. Annual Meeting sessions will explore why certain populations bear a disproportionate burden of disease and mortality and what the public health community can do to better address the causes of these inequities.
Join us as we explore the link between social justice and public health and the importance of expanding the dialogue to include social determinants of health equity in all policy debates. Ultimately education, transportation and housing policies affect the health of people. The challenge for any government – municipal, regional state and federal – is to introduce health consequences into all discussions of social policies. And an important challenge for public health community is to be at the forefront of this debate. Ten years into the new millennium, this theme celebrates the spirit and practice of public health, and also offers an opportunity to expand our understanding of the many links between social circumstance and health.
