Things to do when applying for a visa to enter the U.S:
- Apply for your visa EARLY! New screening processes are in place at all US Embassies that could lengthen your application processing time. The US Consular Services suggests you begin the visa application process at least 60 days prior to your travel date. You may call the Consular Section of your local Embassy to find out how long the wait time is to get an interview.
- Show proof that you have strong ties to your home country. Proof of employment or business ownership are good examples of strong ties.
- If possible, show proof that you have traveled internationally before and have returned within the time restrictions of your visa.
- Present your visa letter of invitation to the Consular Officer during the visa interview. The visa letter of invitation, though not required for the visa application, can assist as a supporting document. You can request a letter of invitation during the registration process.
US Visit Program Please be aware that the US Department of Homeland Security’s US-VISIT program currently applies to all visitors (with limited exemptions) holding non-immigrant visas, regardless of country of origin. What’s new under US-VISIT is that the US Customs and Border Protection Officer now uses the inkless, digital fingerscanner to capture two of your fingerprints. The officer also takes your digital photograph. These procedures add only seconds to the overall processing time.
US-VISIT entry and exit procedures now include visitors traveling under the Visa Waiver Program arriving at or departing from airports and seaports. US-VISIT does not apply to U.S. citizens.
An overview of the entry and exit process can be viewed in the step-by-step guides provided below: US-VISIT Step-by-Step Entry Guide (PDF) US-VISIT Step-by-Step Exit Guide (PDF)
For additional information about the program, please go to US-VISIT.
