Ensuring the right to health and health care

All Americans deserve comprehensive health coverage.

According to the Census Bureau, 49.9 million Americans were uninsured in 2010, a slight increase from 49 million in 2009. The federal government provides health coverage to some Americans through the Medicare and Medicaid programs and to some low-income children through the Children’s Health Insurance Program. In 2014, the provisions in the Affordable Care Act will greatly expand health insurance to many of the uninsured.

APHA calls on Congress to fully implement and fund the main public health and coverage provisions included in the Affordable Care Act that take effect in 2014.
