Washington, D.C., December 11, 2008 – “At a time when national interest in reforming the health system has never been higher, the American Public Health Association (APHA) applauds President-elect Obama for prioritizing health reform and selecting former Sen. Tom Daschle to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.

Daschle will also oversee the new White House Office on Health Reform. He will be joined by Jeanne Lambrew, who will serve as the office’s deputy director.

Throughout his career Daschle has demonstrated a commitment to protecting the health of Americans and his selection further establishes the dedication of the new administration to addressing the critical health issues facing the nation. APHA commends the emphasis on prevention and community-based approaches as central to a new health system that Daschle has expressed as leader of Obama's transition health policy team.
