, D.C., October 8, 2008 – Around 13,000 public health professionals will meet in San Diego, Calif., Oct. 25-29, to address the nation’s top public health challenges at the American Public Health Association’s (APHA) 136th Annual Meeting.
The conference will feature leading experts, researchers and practitioners presenting the latest public health science at nearly a thousand sessions on significant public health issues, including issues of critical political importance such as health reform and reproductive rights. Themed "Public Health Without Borders,” the meeting will also explore transnational public health and will provide a forum to address a diversity of topics, including refugee health, water and land rights, and pollution management across borders.
The meeting kicks off Sunday, Oct. 26, with opening remarks by Sir Michael Marmot, MBBS, MPH, PhD, FRCP, FFPHM, FMedSci, director of the International Institute for Society and Health, and closes Wednesday, Oct. 29, with a panel of former surgeons general, Richard H. Carmona, MD, MPH, FACS; David Satcher, MD, PhD; and M. Joycelyn Elders, MD. In between, more than 900 scientific sessions will provide the most up-to-date public health research, and public health leaders, including Joxel Garcia, MD, MBA, assistant secretary for health; Julie Gerberding, MD, MPH, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and Steven Galson, MD, MPH, acting surgeon general, will provide their perspective on critical public health issues.
The online press registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 17. After this date, reporters must register on site at the APHA Press Office in Room 14A of the San Diego Convention Center.
