In the mid 1980’s, I attended my first APHA meeting in Washington, DC to present a poster on falls in the elderly in Connecticut. Not knowing much about APHA, but having an interest in injury and emergency services, I attended the business meeting of the ICEHS SPIG, and started to learn more about APHA, and the group of colleagues in ICEHS who have traveled on this journey with me and supported me. What impressed me was the true collegiality of the group – the dedication and commitment to preventing injury and violence and to working to better the health of the public. For example, even though I was a newbie, and had never met anyone from the SPIG in the past, one of the members invited me to have coffee with Dr. Bill Foege who was then the Director of the CDC.
