Dr. Khan is the Medical Director of the Eugene DuPont Preventive Medicine & Rehabilitation Institute (PMRI) and the Center for Community Health (CCH) at the Christiana Care Health System in Delaware. He is also Director of the Global Health Track in the Department of Family Medicine, and Chair of the Global Health Working Group of the Delaware Health Sciences Alliance. He is on the Board of several organizations including the Delaware Academy of Medicine, Project Bangladesh and Medscape/WebMD; co-founder of the non-profit Writers Without Borders; and Advisor to the International Association of National Public Health Institutes (IANPHI), which links scientists from CDCs and NIHs around the world.

Dr. Khan holds faculty appointments at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Jefferson Medical College. He previously served on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and the University of Vermont College of Medicine. He has authored over 55 peer-reviewed articles and chapters, and reviews for a number of journals, including the American Journal of Public Health, JAMA, and others. He also serves on the editorial boards of several journals. He has authored/co-authored 4 books in the area of global health, including ‘Readings in Global Health’ [with Sir Michael Marmot, the late Allan Rosenfield and others] and ‘The End of Polio?’ [with Tim Brookes]. His most recent book, ‘Megacities & Global Health’, co-edited with Greg Pappas, was published in July 2011 by APHA. He serves on the editorial board of the APHA/WHO Control of Communicable Disease Manual.

Omar has been named a ‘Top Doc’ by Philadelphia magazine; has received the Recent Alumnus of the Year award from Wilmington Friends School; Alumnus of the Year award and the Teacher of the Year award from the University of Vermont; the AAFP/Pfizer Teaching Development Award; the Executive Director’s Citation from the APHA; and the Humanism in Medicine Award from the Arnold F. Gold Foundation. 

Dr. Khan is Chair of the APHA Science Board and chair-elect for the International Health Section. He has previously served as Chair of the IH conference program and Chair of the Publications Board. He is the recipient of the APHA Executive Director’s Citation in 2005, and the IH section Service Award in 2012.
