APHA-SA: Advancement Committee

Mission Statement:

The mission of the Advancement Committee is to facilitate the professional development of students interested in public health. In particular, we assist students in the development of professional skills, career decision-making tools, and job search techniques in order to maximize their employment potential. To achieve this mission, we develop and circulate our own professional curriculum, host networking events, and provide unique access to employment opportunities. The Advancement Committee is recognized as APHA-Student Assembly’s primary resource to meet the evolving needs of young professionals in public health.

Communications Subcommittee:

Mission: to increase participation within the committee and evaluate satisfaction of committee members.

Chair: Ikea Mulkey of Buffalo, NY. BS in Pharmacology and Toxicology. Working towards MPH in Epidemiology. Also a member of New York State Public Health Association.


Networking Subcommittee:

Mission: to encourage, initiate, organize, and promote networking events for public health students. The Networking Subcommittee supports the APHA-SA Advancement Committee mission of facilitating professional development by hosting events that provide public health students with information, resources and networking opportunities as they navigate their career options. This subcommittee is committed to supporting events that focus on the following: connecting public health students with their peers and public health practitioners, providing students with communication and leadership skill building opportunities, and offering relevant information to assist students in the career development process.

Chair: Marianne Olaniran
Marianne is a Master of Public Health (Global Health Leadership) Candidate at New York University.  Her research interests include the social and behavioral determinants of health, specifically as it affects children and adolescents, and she is obtaining advanced knowledge and skills in this area at The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in New York City. Her current project involves strategies and policies regarding immunization worldwide.

Prior to her public health career, she obtained extensive accounting/audit and budget analysis experience working both in the private sector (Deloitte) and the United States Federal Government (Office of Inspector General, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services) in Washington, DC. She holds a Master of Science degree in Health Sciences from the George Washington University, and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Utah. Marianne is a recipient of various scholarship awards. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and family, playing the piano, singing, dancing, and watching detective shows.

Opportunties Subcommittee:

The Opportunities subcommittee strives to provide an easy reference to job openings that may fit your criteria of what you are looking for.  The subcommittee also offers a way for you to reference jobs that will enable ideas of what qualifications you may need in order to reach future goals.  We hope to service your needs.

Chair: Johannan Kelly, director of Employment Communications
Johannan Kelly is an RN who graduated with a Bachelor of Nursing degree at Creighton University. 

Professional Development Committee:

Mission:The mission is two-fold: 1) We want to generate content for the APHA-SA professional development curriculum; 2) we offer an opportunity for writers to hone their skills.  Many people in public health education will go on to write editorials, policy, or books.  Since all articles will be published, writing for the Professional Development sub-committee is a way for students to start building their skills and portfolios.


The goal is to publish one article for each of the P.L.A.N topics each month.  The articles are expected to be ~300 words.  However, length is not so important as long as the writers achieve their goal/message in an understandable fashion.  The structure is also entirely up to the writer.  Articles can be standard paragraphs, they can be bullet points, they can even be presentation slides.  Let writers be creative!  Just be sure that the writers ultimately achieve the goal of their article.


Currently, I am a senior PhD student at Washington University in Saint Louis where I study Molecular Microbiology and Microbial Pathogenesis.  I became interested in APHA because I intend to get involved with the CDC and WHO at some point in my career.  However, it took me quite a bit of research to determine that APHA was a necessary step in my career ambitions.  Many hours of professional development seminars and mentor conversations were logged before I made this decision.  As a student, I know how important it is to have someone guide you through career transitions and to inform you of your options.  That's why I started the Professional Development Sub-committee.  It's an opportunity for our team to share professional development advice with those students who are in need of guidance and advice.  After all, the more you know about professional development, the better equipped you are for success.




Website Subcommittee

The website subcommittee develops and maintains APHA-SA’s Advancement Committee webpage with the help of APHA Webpage Committee. Our goal is to regularly update the webpage with current and professional development content including webinars, conferences, career & networking opportunities, post-grad trainings, and fellowships. It is our hope that the APHA members will advance professionally by learning and practicing new skills through these opportunities.

Chair: Hung Le
Hung Le is recent graduate from Washington State University, College of Pharmacy in Spokane, WA. He has a passion for learning and using all the acquire knowledge and skills to improve people’s health. Hung is looking forward to work with a public health organization one day such as the World Health Organization or Centers for Disease Control.
